Israel-Gaza war: Israel takes control of Gaza hospital as UN warns of famine in north - BBC News Israel-Gaza war: Israel takes control of Gaza hospital as UN warns of famine in north - BBC News
(32 minutes later)
We've just received a new statement from the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), which says the al-Shifa hospital raid is ongoing. Imogen Foulkes
Twenty people, who the IDF describe as "terrorists", have been killed and "dozens of apprehended suspects are currently in questioning", the statement says. Geneva Correspondent
The BBC is unable to independently verify the details of the raid. The UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Gaza says the UN will not participate in the evacuation of civilians from Rafah ahead of a possible Israeli ground attack there.
The IDF claims to have found "terror funds" and "weapons" in the hospital. Speaking to journalists in Geneva, Jamie McGoldrick said moving people to so-called "humanitarian islands" would amount to forced displacement.
He added that so far the UN had been given no details by Israel about how exactly the estimated 1.5 million people currently sheltering in Rafah would be moved.
Would they be "pushed, forced, or encouraged?" McGoldrick asked.
