Crucial post strike talks resume UK postal strike 'self-defeating'
(about 3 hours later)
Talks between Royal Mail and union have resumed after 12 hours of discussions on Monday failed to avert planned nationwide strikes. A nationwide postal strike would be "totally self-defeating", Business Secretary Peter Mandelson has said.
Union sources say there is no sign yet of a breakthrough ahead of the first of two 24 hour walk-outs on Thursday. Industrial action would not resolve the dispute but simply drive customers away from Royal Mail and could "irrevocably damage" its reputation, he added.
Discussions between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union have continued to try to avert the strike.

A statement on the dispute is expected later in the House of Lords from Business Secretary Lord Mandelson. Union sources say there is no sign yet of a breakthrough ahead of the first of two 24 hour walk-outs on Thursday.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that the Ministry of Defence may lay on extra aircraft to ensure troops in the field get their Christmas post. Finance concern
The BBC has learned additional aircraft could be provided to move mail between Britain and Afghanistan and within the UK should the row not be resolved. Lord Mandelson said that some customers who wanted to deliver parcels were already turning to rival firms.
Royal Mail is in dispute with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) over pay, conditions and modernisation plans. "Royal Mail's finances will be plunged into the red... one thing this company cannot afford is strikes and industrial action," he told the House of Lords.
The company said it was trying hard to reach agreement. The strikes could also put small firms at risk just at a time when economic conditions appeared to be improving, Lord Mandelson added.
Avoiding strikes was "in the interests of Royal Mail, its employees and its customers", he said.

Sources in the CWU described Monday's talks in Windsor, Berkshire, as a positive sign but added there was no sign of a settlement at this stage. If the strikes did go ahead for a prolonged period, contingency plans for delivery of hospital appointments and medical test results were being drawn up, the Lords were told.
Its call for independent mediation has been backed by almost 100 MPs as well as the Business Secretary Peter Mandelson. Earlier it emerged that the Ministry of Defence may lay on extra aircraft to ensure troops in the field get their Christmas post.
