Version 0 of 1.

A driver has been jailed for eight months after his car hit a 68-year-old man on a zebra crossing.

Richard Bushrod, 23, had drunk three pints of Guinness before the incident in Whitchurch, Cardiff, in March, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

The pedestrian, Clive Rixon, died from his injuries in hospital.

Bushrod, who admitted causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol, said he did not see Mr Rixon.

Prosecutor Chris Rees told the court that Mr Rixon had taken three or four steps when Bushrod's car hit him.

"His shopping bag flew into the air and witnesses saw his arms and legs twisted," he said.

Bushrod, who had a previous conviction for drink-driving, was arrested at the scene after failing a breath test.

He had a level of 39 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Judge Phillip Richard told Bushrod: "I accept this was a tragic accident but it was caused by your consumption of alcohol and the effect that had on your driving."

At the time of his death, Mr Rixon's family paid tribute to him, describing him as a "kind, thoughtful" man who liked to follow rugby.
