On hearing of the charges, Ms MacKeown told the BBC she was "extremely disappointed" that the men had not been charged with murder.
She said she was in the process of contacting her India-based lawyer to talk through developments in the case.
Ms MacKeown intends to fly to India for the trial which she is hoping will be held in Goa.
