David Cameron has urged Israeli leaders to do "as little as possible to escalate" tensions in the Middle East on a visit to Jerusalem. Benjamin Netanyahu has told UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron that Israel would "make its own decisions" over how to respond to an Iranian attack.
The UK foreign secretary met Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit on Wednesday. He said his government would "do everything necessary to defend itself" during talks the British government had hoped would help prevent escalation.

Lord Cameron urged Israel to limit the scale of its response over fears it could lead to a regional wider war. Lord Cameron told him any response should be "smart" and limited.
He called on Israel's government to be "smart as well as tough". Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem after the meeting with Mr Netanyahu, Lord Cameron said he was there to "demonstrate our solidarity" after Iran's "appalling" attack.
Speaking to reporters shortly after arriving in Jerusalem, Lord Cameron said he was there to "show solidarity after that appalling attack by Iran". He continued: "We hope that anything Israel does is as limited and as targeted and as smart as possible.
He continued: "It's right to have made our views clear about what should happen next, but it's clear the Israelis are making a decision to act. "It's in no one's interest that we see escalation and that is what we said very clearly to all the people I've been speaking to here in Israel."
"We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible. And in a way that, as I said yesterday, is smart as well as tough. According to a statement released by Mr Netanyahu's office after the meeting, the Israeli Prime Minister told Lord Cameron: "I want to make it clear - we will make our own decisions, and the State of Israel will do everything necessary to defend itself."
"But the real need is to refocus back on Hamas, back on the hostages, back on getting the aid in, back on getting a pause in the conflict in Gaza."
