The attack in Birmingham in March 2023 saw counter-terrorism officers brought in, but there was no evidence Abbkr was motivated by a particular ideology, and so the incidents were not treated as a terrorist attack. Judge Melbourne Inman KC said the attack on Mr Rayaz left him "engulfed in flames".
In pictures shown to the jury, Abbkr could be seen inside the Dudley Road Mosque in Birmingham in the same room as Mr Rayaz, attending evening prayers. Addressing Abbkr on the video link, he added that the CCTV footage of the attack was "horrific".
The defendant, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, had admitted setting fire to both men, but claimed those he attacked were not human and therefore not expected to be hurt by fire. It's clear you then threw further petrol on him as he burned.
