Sussex Police said a police car had been following his vehicle for a short time before the crash and here were no passengers in the car. | |
The circumstances of the incident are being investigated and the case referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. | |
Sussex Police said officers responded to a 999 call at 2337 BST from a member of the public who reported seeing a car collide with a parked car in Downview Road, Worthing. | |
Blue lights | |
Two further emergency calls were made by other witnesses who said they had seen a car with collision damage being driven erratically in the town. | |
Neighbourhood response team officers located a red Nissan car being driven in Brighton Road, Worthing, at 2352 BST. They put their vehicle's blue lights on and requested it to stop. | |
However, it failed to do so and two minutes later the car hit a tree in Grinstead Lane. | |
Police officers removed the driver from the car and tried to resuscitate him until an ambulance arrived but the man was declared dead at the scene. | |
A police spokesman appealed for anyone who witnessed the car being driven before the collision, or the crash, to contact them. | |
