Sussex Police said officers responded to a 999 call at 2337 BST from a member of the public who reported seeing a car collide with a parked car in Downview Road, Worthing.
Blue lights
Two further emergency calls were made by other witnesses who said they had seen a car with collision damage being driven erratically in the town.
Neighbourhood response team officers located a red Nissan car being driven in Brighton Road, Worthing, at 2352 BST. They put their vehicle's blue lights on and requested it to stop.
However, it failed to do so and two minutes later the car hit a tree in Grinstead Lane.
Police officers removed the driver from the car and tried to resuscitate him until an ambulance arrived but the man was declared dead at the scene.
A police spokesman appealed for anyone who witnessed the car being driven before the collision, or the crash, to contact them.
