At least 34,735 people have died and 78,108 have been injured in the Gaza Strip since 7 October, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says. EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell has criticised Israel's evacuation order in eastern Rafah, ahead of an expected ground offensive in the southern Gazan city.
Fifty-two people have died and 90 have been injured in the last 24 hours, it adds, but notes that many people are trapped under rubble where ambulances cannot reach them. "Israel's evacuation orders to civilians in Rafah portend the worst: more war and famine. It is unacceptable. Israel must renounce to a ground offensive," he said.
Hamas fighters stormed into southern Israel on 7 October, killing about 1,200 people and seizing more than 250 hostages, some of whom are still being held in Gaza. "The EU, with the International Community, can and must act to prevent such scenario."
Earlier, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen repeated her call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and urged the release of hostages held by Hamas.
