Porn e-mail firefighters sacked

Two firefighters have been sacked after a four-month investigation into pornographic e-mails at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Mark Sapple, who was once snapped topless for a charity calendar, and Christopher Moss have been dismissed for "sharing unauthorised material". A further three employees have been demoted, six have received final warnings and three were sent warnings. All 13 have the right to appeal. The union was not available for comment. A fire service spokesman confirmed the police had been called to ask for guidance in case any of the material sent was judged to be illegal. 'Extremely disappointing' "It was not illegal, but if it had been, we would have acted straight away and the police would have become involved," he added. The firefighters were dismissed on Friday. Neither could be contacted for comment. Mr Sapple, who was based in the city centre, had previously posed for a calendar to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity, which helps thousands of injured fire officers every year. Deputy county fire officer Kieran Nolan said: "Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service acted swiftly to initiate an internal investigation, keeping the trade unions fully informed at all stages. "Our service is held in high regard by the people of Greater Manchester and those businesses and organisations that work with us. "Our reputation is built on the professionalism, integrity and respect of our staff and the work they do. "The behaviour of these individuals is extremely disappointing, but I can assure the public that we will always take the appropriate disciplinary action against those who fail to meet the professional standards that is expected." |
