An investigation has been launched after the body of a woman was found in a river.

Gwent Police said the body has not yet been identified, and they are treating the death as unexplained.

Officers were called at 1012 GMT to the River Ebbw near Allotment Road at Beaufort, Ebbw Vale.

A post-mortem examination is to take place on the woman, who was white, aged between 60 and 80, of medium build with grey, collar-length hair.

She was wearing a grey checked knee-length skirt, light pink woollen jumper, cream cardigan, a brown, or possibly green, three-quarter length coat with hood, size six brown leather slip-on shoes and a gold wedding ring.

Inquires are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, said a spokesperson for Gwent Police.

Det Insp Richard Williams said: "I would appeal to anyone who may have information that can help us identify this woman, or who may be able to assist us in our enquiries regarding this to ring Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111".
