Russian army plane crashes in sea Russian army plane crashes in sea
(about 9 hours later)
A Russian military plane with at least nine people on board has crashed in the country's Far East, officials say. A Russian military plane carrying 11 crew members has crashed into the sea in the far-east of the country.
The Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft went down in the Tatar Strait on a training flight shortly after 1100 GMT. The Tu-142 plane disappeared from radar over the Tatar Strait, near the island of Sakhalin, military officials say.
It is not known if there were survivors in the crash, about 15km (nine miles) off the coast, although one report said some human remains had been found. Search operations continue although an emergency ministry official has said all the missing are presumed dead.
The Tu-142 is a maritime reconnaissance aircraft which was widely used by the Soviet navy. Some reports suggest the plane's fuselage has already been found. Just last week a Russian cargo plane crashed in eastern Yakutia, killing 11 people.
According to one report, an object which could be the missing plane's fuselage has been found in 44 meters (144 ft) of water.
All flights of Russia's Pacific Fleet have been suspended pending the results of an investigation into the accident, reports say.
