Protest arrests at gas terminal Arrests at LNG pipeline protest
(about 1 hour later)
Seven people have been arrested at the South Hook liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Milford Haven after protesters chained themselves together. A protest at a gas terminal over the construction of pipeline from west Wales to Gloucestershire has ended.
Five others are chained together inside pipes at the site entrance. A police operation was launched after around a dozen activists broke into the South Hook liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal near Milford Haven.
It is the latest in a series of protests at various stages of the 190-mile (306 km) pipeline being built from Milford Haven to Gloucestershire. There were seven arrests near a jetty and another protest group blocked a road into the terminal by chaining themselves together inside pipes.
Campaigners said the protest was designed to stop work at the terminal, but the attempt appears to have failed. Protests have already been held against the 190-mile (306 km) pipeline.
Police said seven protesters were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass, with one of these also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage.Police said seven protesters were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass, with one of these also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage.
Protesters claimed the pipeline is damaging the environment and have raised health and safety concerns. Campaigners said the protest, which began at around 0400 GMT, was designed to stop work at the terminal, but the attempt appears to have failed.
Previously, contractor the National Grid had said the pipeline was needed to meet the UK's growing energy needs.
