Three Israeli hostages and five Thai nationals are expected to be freed from Gaza by Hamas on Thursday, Israel has said. Three Israeli hostages and five Thai nationals held by Hamas in Gaza since the 7 October 2023 attacks were released on Thursday, the Israeli government has said.
Two women, civilian Arbel Yehud, 29, and military observer Agam Berger, 20, have been named along with an 80-year-old man, Gadi Moses, as the Israelis set for release. Agam Berger, a 20-year-old soldier, was reunited with her family at a military base in southern Israel after being handed over by armed Palestinian fighters to the Red Cross in Jabalia, northern Gaza.
If completed, it will be the third hostage release of the latest Gaza ceasefire deal. In exchange for the Israeli hostages, 110 Palestinians are being freed from Israeli jails. About two hours later there was another handover in the southern city of Khan Younis. Israeli civilians Arbel Yehud, 29, and Gadi Moses, 80, were pictured being escorted by fighters into a Red Cross vehicle.
The Thai hostages' names have not yet been made public. Their release would be a unilateral move by Hamas, and would not constitute part of the deal. The Israeli military subsequently announced that they had been transferred to its forces in Gaza along with five Thai hostages and then moved to Israel.
They are reportedly agricultural workers who were abducted from Israel where they worked. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office named the Thai nationals as agricultural workers Pongsak Thaenna, Sathian Suwannakham, Watchara Sriaoun, Bannawat Seathao and Surasak Lamnao.
Thailand's government has said six of its citizens are still being held hostage in Gaza. Under a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, 110 Palestinians should be released from Israeli jails in exchange for the Israeli hostages on Thursday.
Their names are Watchara Sriuan, Bannawat Seatho, Sathian Suwannakham, Nattapong Pinta, Pongsak Tanna and Surasak Lamnau. The release of the Thai nationals was not part of the agreement, which began on 19 January and should see a total of 33 Israeli hostages freed in return for about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and detainees from Gaza in Israeli jails during the first phase lasting six weeks.
Thailand said two other Thai hostages - Sudthisak Rinthalak and Sonthaya Oakkharasri - are believed to be dead. So far, 10 of those Israeli hostages - five civilians, including four women, and five female soldiers - have been freed.
The names of the 110 Palestinian prisoners set to be freed by Israel have not been released either, but it's thought they include at least 30 women and children, as well as prisoners sentenced to life terms. About 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken back to Gaza as hostages when Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023.
Their release is part of the third such exchange since the ceasefire came into effect on 19 January. Seven women have already been freed alive in exchange for more than 290 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. This triggered a massive Israeli military offensive in Gaza, which has killed more than 47,000 Palestinians, the Hamas-run health ministry says.
A fourth hostage release involving three men is expected to take place on Saturday, the Israeli government said.
The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage.
More than 47,310 people in Gaza have been killed since then in Israel's offensive, the majority of them civilians, the territory's Hamas-run health ministry says.
