The secretary of state has said he is optimistic executive ministers will resolve their differences over the proposed shake-up of local government. He is hopeful they can do so before their meeting next Thursday. Environment Minister Edwin Poots is proposing changes to the planned boundaries for 11 new councils. Mr Poots has warned that if his suggestions cannot be agreed by this Thursday's meeting the whole local government shake-up could collapse. This would force an early council election. "I'm optimistic and also I'm realistic. I think people in Northern Ireland have travelled a long way," NI Secretary Shaun Woodward said. "Whilst there may be a degree of raising issues to the point of a challenge, nonetheless I think what Northern Ireland consistently shows is that the politicians are able to meet these challenges. "I'm confident they'll be able to do so on this issue as well." |
