Two men have appeared in court charged with murdering the soldiers. The Republican Network for Unity (RNU), an umbrella group for republicans opposed to Sinn Fein, has said the man was one of their leading members, Tony 'TC' Catney.
The RNU said said Mr Catney was arrested at Belfast International Airport on Sunday as he arrived back in Northern Ireland from meetings in Glasgow.
Mr Catney was sentenced to life for a murder committed in 1974.
He later became a senior official in Sinn Fein before leaving the party over the Good Friday Agreement.
