A major gas leak in south Belfast has led to nearby homes being evacuated. A major gas leak in south Belfast which caused more than 50 homes to be evacuated has been repaired.
Engineers were called to repair a gas main which ruptured on both sides of the Ormeau Bridge on Monday evening. Part of the Ormeau Road was cordoned off after a fire under the Ormeau Bridge caused a mains gas pipe to rupture on Monday night.
The Ormeau Road has been cordoned off between Hatfield Street and Baroda Street on the other side of the bridge. Phoenix Gas said their engineers had repaired the fault. However, there were concerns about the structure of the bridge.
A strong smell of gas was reported in the area as gas spilled out of the pipes. Residents have been advised to close all doors and windows and to extinguish all naked flames outside. It was not certain if it would be re-opened before rush hour on Tuesday.
