Flood alert as gales batter Wales Flooding warnings after rainfall
(about 3 hours later)
Ten flood warnings are in place, dozens of roads impassable and a number of bridges were closed to vehicles as gale force winds batter Wales. Sixteen flood warnings are in place throughout Wales with more wind and rain forecast overnight.
At one stage North Wales Police were dealing with 25 flood-related incidents, and the fire service rescued stranded drivers in Bala, Gwynedd. Dozens of roads remain closed as rivers burst their banks, and already saturated land turned into lakes.
At Llanrwst, Conwy, a man, believed to be homeless, was rescued after he was stranded by water near playing fields. In Gwynedd emergency services rescued trapped motorists, and in Conwy the fire service located a man, believed to be homeless, stranded by shallow water.
More rain and winds were forecast later. Traffic link Wales is still reporting 22 roads either closed, or open with restrictions across Wales.
Disruption was widespread with one lane of the M48 Severn Bridge closed, while the A55 Britannia Bridge in Gwynedd and Cleddau Bridge at Pembroke Dock was closed to high sided vehicles. The road closures, or restrictions, were due to both flooding and high, gusting, winds.
The Environment Agency said the flood affected areas are: The lower and upper Dee valleys, Clarach Bay tidal, the River Wye at Builth Wells, River Dyfi, Machynthlleth, River Clwyd, Ruthin, Conwy Valley, the rivers Mawddach, Wnion and the town of Dolgellau, the Meifiod area excluding the defended areas of Meifod Town and River Ritec at Tenby. Drivers faced a long diversion due to flooding on the A487 Dyfi bridge at Machynlleth, Powys.
A section of the Cardiff's B4562 St Mellons Road was closed on Wednesday morning after two trees fell, snagging overhead BT lines. Particularly badly affected was Bala, Trawsfynydd and Dolgellau areas of Gwynedd, with dozens of roads closed.
Cardiff Council said it happened west of the Ty Draw Road junction. The main A470 artery north to south was "just passable" at Betws-y-Coed, Conwy and at Llanelltyd, Gwynedd.
Overnight rainfall brought flooding, including here at Llanrwst in Conwy Conwy council's Food Control Room was activated because of the problems there.
In Gwynedd the area around Bala, and also Dolgellau seemed to be worst affected with property flooded, livestock stranded and dozens of roads closed. A council spokeswoman said: "The council's environment and highways teams are responding to problems across the county."
Areas of the A470 main trunk road linking north and south Wales closed for hours at Dolclochydd, Llanuwchllyn and Fairy Glen, Betws y Coed.
Drivers were advised to take care as other smaller roads in the same areas are either blocked or only passable with great care.
The Met Office put out warnings for downpours and gusts of wind of up to 60mph for Wales for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
There could be more than 40mm of rain, and it will continue to fall over the next few days on already saturated ground, a Met Office spokeswoman said.
It's going to be a bit miserable with all that rain around and very cloudy Met Office spokeswoman
"It's going to be a bit miserable with all that rain around and very cloudy," she said.
"The wind won't necessarily be as strong as it was last weekend, but it's still gale force when it's gusting up to 60mph."

The A4054 Cardiff Road was also blocked near Treharne Road, which could affect traffic between Treharris and Merthyr Tydfil.
