Flood warnings as rain batters UK Flooding hits rain-battered north
(about 2 hours later)
Householders are braced for flooding after heavy rain battered parts of northern England, north-west Wales and western Scotland - with more to come. Heavy rain has brought floods to north-western parts of the UK, with Dumfries and Galloway and Cumbria the worst hit.
Cumbria bore the brunt with the village of Shap witnessing 40mm (1.6in) in 12 hours and Keswick 30mm (1.2in) of rain. The Environment Agency has now issued five severe flood warnings in Cumbria and three in Scotland.
Severe weather warnings are in place and there are 30 flood warnings across England and Wales and 10 in Scotland. Its Floodline service has received more than 7,000 calls from members of the public in the past 24 hours.
BBC forecasters said Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway were at greatest risk on Thursday. Seathwaite, Shap and Keswick in Cumbria recorded rainfall of 173mm (6.8in), 71.6mm (2.8in) and 64.2mm (2.5in) respectively in a 24-hour period.
The Environment Agency said a handful of properties in Cumbria and north-west Wales had already flooded. Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway had 57.8mm (2.3in).
And the BBC Weather Centre said winds would gust up to 70mph (112km/h) in some areas, but added the extremely wet weather was the main concern. The five severe flood warnings in Cumbria are in Cockermouth, Keswick and Eamont Bridge plus two in Burneside. In Scotland they are at Ettrick Water, Yarrow Water and Teviot Water.
