Lorries damaged in Mallusk blaze Exclusion zone set up after fire

Eight lorries have been badly damaged in a fire at a mechanical engineering works in Newtownabbey. A 200m exclusion zone has been put in place around a mechanical engineering works on the outskirts of Belfast following an overnight fire.
The Fire and Rescue Service was called to the yard in an industrial estate at Mallusk at about 2230 GMT. Firefighters said the presence of gas cylinders on the site in Newtownabbey meant the area would be cordoned off until 2300 GMT on Friday.
As well as fighting the fire in the lorries, fire crews also had to set up a 200 metre exclusion zone because of gas canisters on the site. Eight lorries have been badly damaged in the fire at the premises at Mallusk Industrial Estate.
The area is close to Sandyknowes roundabout but it is not currently within the existing cordon. A number of roads in the area have been closed to traffic.
The exclusion zone is expected to be in place until 2300 GMT on Friday. The Fire and Rescue Service was called to the yard to tackle the blaze at about 2230 GMT on Thursday.

The area is close to the busy Sandyknowes roundabout and the roads affected include:
  • The M2 countrybound off-slip at Sandyknowes
  • The Antrim Road between Sandyknowes and Templepatrick
  • Scullions Road
However, the M2 off-slip towards Belfast is open.
Motorists who have been affected by the closures have been asked to take an alternative route and leave extra time for their journey.
