Canoeists spark rescue operation Canoeist pulled from river dies

A major operation is under way in Devon to rescue a group of canoeists that got into difficulty in bad weather on the River Dart. A 46-year-old canoeist who was pulled from a swollen river on Dartmoor in bad weather has died, Devon and Somerset Fire Service has confirmed.
The emergency services and a search and rescue helicopter are involved in the operation near Poundsgate on Dartmoor. The man, from Reading, was pulled from the water by members of the public after getting trapped against a tree in the River Dart at Newton Abbot, Devon.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the alarm was raised at 1630 GMT. One canoeist was pulled from the water by members of the public. Two others, believed to be part of a canoeing party, also had to be rescued and were suffering hypothermia.
The remote location and poor conditions is making the operation hazardous. Fire services and a search and rescue helicopter were alerted at 1630 GMT.
