The Sun says it threatens to dominate the political agenda for months. The Daily Mail expresses doubts whether Sir John can live up to his promise, <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1230364/Iraq-war-inquiry-wont-quiz-Gordon-Brown-A-travesty-PM-escapes-probe-critics-claim.html">then says it hopes he will prove it wrong.</a> The <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/nov/23/chilcot-inquiry-iraq-war">Guardian,</a> meanwhile, reports that senior judicial figures believe the inquiry is incapable of addressing the key issue of the invasion's legality. The <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/leading-articles/leading-article-the-crucial-questions-that-the-iraq-inquiry-must-answer-1826459.html">Independent</a> thinks people should be realistic, arguing the inquiry is unlikely to satisfy all sides. And the Financial Times says <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/47cbfaae-d899-11de-b63a-00144feabdc0.html?nclick_check=1">Whitehall will view it with dread</a> because the process will shine an unflattering light on the establishment. The <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/6639925/Iraq-inquiry-witnesses-could-be-given-immunity-from-prosecution.html">Daily Telegraph</a> says some people think Mr Chilcot was chosen because he is an establishment figure. But it says he has shown he will stand up to the government by insisting as much as possible be heard in public. Cash incentives Several papers cover the story of Jane Andrews, a former aide to the Duchess of York who has absconded from prison. The Daily Mirror says <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/11/23/fergie-s-former-aide-jane-andrews-escapes-east-sutton-park-prison-115875-21844448/">police are now guarding the Duchess</a> and the <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2743337/Fergies-suicide-flunky-Jane-Andrews-flees-open-prison.html">Sun</a> asks why she was moved to an open jail eight years into her life term for murder. The Daily Telegraph claims householders will be offered <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/businessandecology/recycling/6638002/Tories-to-pay-people-to-recycle-in-green-revolution.html">cash incentives to recycle</a> under Conservative plans. And the <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/142086">Daily Express</a> says millions of bank customers face charges as high as £2.50 for withdrawing their own money. DNA database controversy The Daily Mirror is worried about a report which says people are being arrested so they can give <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/11/24/cops-arrest-people-so-they-can-get-their-dna-115875-21845232/">DNA samples for the national database.</a> This backdoor collection is underhand, it says, and must never be tolerated. The Times is also concerned and calls for <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/leading_article/article6928891.ece">anyone not convicted of a crime to be removed from the database.</a> Finally the Sun tells us model <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/im_a__celebrity/2743267/Katie-Price-aka-Jordan-ends-her-relationship-with-cage-fighter-Alex-Reid.html">Katie Price reportedly dumped her lover</a> hours after quitting the ITV reality show I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. |
