Flood risk as Cumbria rivers peak Cumbria escapes renewed flooding
(about 5 hours later)
Cumbria has been warned to expect more flooding after heavy rain raised water levels on already swollen rivers. Cumbria escaped fresh flooding overnight as river levels started to fall.
But the Environment Agency said river levels were expected to peak later, before a spell of drier weather. The Environment Agency said water levels in the region peaked at 0300 GMT Wednesday.
There are still a dozen flood warnings in the region and the possible collapse of a bridge in Workington threatens to knock out up to 2,000 telephone lines. But it said the River Eden would peak in Carlisle at 1100 GMT, although the defences built after the floods of 2005 were expected to keep the city safe.
There are 13 flood warnings in place in the area, mainly around Keswick and Cockermouth. Showers are forecast.

A spokesman said: "If it had just come by itself it wouldn't cause us too much concern but because it's falling on saturated ground there's the likelihood of further flooding, but not as extreme as last week. The Environment Agency said Tuesday's heaviest rain fell between 2100 GMT and midnight.
A spokesman said: "The ground is saturated and, although river levels are starting to drop, they are still high. If we were to get further rain we could get more flooding.
