Police divers find body in lough
(1 day later) | |
The body of an 88-year-old man has been recovered from Rossole Lough in County Fermanagh.
Police divers had been searching the lough for a man who went missing after the body of his wife was discovered at their home on Tuesday.
Ann Barbour's body was discovered by a neighbour in a house in the Sligo Road area of Enniskillen.
It is understood Mrs Barbour, 83, had Alzheimer's disease. Her husband, Bill, 88, was her primary carer.
Mr Barbour is a former member of the Alliance party who taught at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen.
Alliance leader David Ford said Mr Barbour is "well-known and widely respected" in Enniskillen.
"He worked hard for Alliance, both in Fermanagh and centrally," continued Mr Ford.
"He was a devoted and caring husband. I am devastated by this news.
"I know that Ann and Bill's whole family will be in the thoughts and prayers of everyone involved with the Alliance Party."
'Tragedy' | |
The area's MP, Michelle Gildernew of Sinn Fein, said what had happened was "a real tragedy".
"My thoughts at this time are very much with the family of the lady, who will no doubt be under a great deal of trauma and stress," she said.
"This is a well-known and respected family in the area and my heart goes out to them at this very difficult time."
The couple had lived in the house in the Sligo Road area since the 1960s and have four children.
A post-mortem examination is expected to take place on Thursday to establish how the woman died.
Police have appealed for anyone who may have information as to Mr Barbour's whereabouts to contact them.
"Anyone who noticed Mr Barbour in the Sligo Road, or Lough Rossole areas of Enniskillen between 1300 GMT on Monday and 1900 GMT on Tuesday, or anyone who knows of his current whereabouts is asked to contact the police at Enniskillen," a spokesman said. |
