Bridge reopens after diesel spill
(19 minutes later) | |
One of the two crossings over to the island of Anglesey has reopened after being closed following a diesel spill from a tanker.
Traffic was diverted from the Menai Suspension Bridge via the Britannia Bridge during Wednesday morning.
There was some disruption to travellers due to restrictions on high sided vehicles due to strong winds.
The Environment Agency is still working to prevent any of the diesel entering the Menai Strait via the road drains.
A spokesman for the agency said the leak began whilst the lorry was crossing the bridge, and an estimated 350 litres of fuel had escaped.
"Officers from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, using specialist kit supplied by the agency, are removing the diesel from the drainage system using a water powered pump to prevent it from polluting the Menai Strait," he said.
"Officers are also working to prevent any further fuel from entering the drainage system," he added.
The agency is also monitoring to check if any fuel has already entered the water as it could damage wildlife, and effect the local shellfish and tourist industries, he said.
Roads have also now been gritted and sanded and this will be swept up removing any residual fuel oil off the surface. |
