Sports Minister Nelson McCausland has criticised the IFA for a six-figure payout it made to settle a case taken by its former chief executive.

Howard Wells took an unfair dismissal case after he was sacked from his £100,000 a year post in October 2008.

The case hit the finances of the soccer body, which also paid legal costs.

Mr McCausland said: "This will be the second time in less than 10 years where substantial payments have been made by the IFA to senior employees."

Speaking during ministerial questions on Tuesday, he added: "In terms of governance and accountability, you will understand my concerns that this is money that could have been put to good use at all levels of the game."

Mr McCausland said the IFA "could be doing more" to "punch its weight" in attracting public funding on the same level as other sporting organisations.

The minister also expressed concerns about the strategic direction and governance of the Ulster Scots Agency.

He said it was important that public funds were used in an efficient way.
