Scores of people have been killed and injured in a train crash in Russia, reports say. Rescue workers are searching for survivors of a Russian express train crash who may be trapped in wreckage.
A major rescue effort continues as the government said 25 people had died, with 100 injured, and another 40 unaccounted for among 660 passengers. The government says 25 people are known to have died in the derailment, amid speculation that it may have been caused by a bomb blast.
At least three carriages of the express train came off the tracks as it travelled from Moscow to St Petersburg, on one of Russia's busiest rail links. Earlier, one official reported that 39 people had died, but that has now been denied by the authorities.
A small crater had been found at the scene, sparking speculation of a blast. The train, travelling from Moscow to St Petersburg, crashed on Friday night near Bologoye town in Tver region.
A 2007 bomb on the same line derailed a train, injuring nearly 30 passengers. About 90 people were injured as at least three carriages of the express train came off the tracks as it travelled on one of Russia's busiest rail links.
Mobile hospital An investigation is under way into the cause of the crash. A small crater at the scene of the wreck has raised suspicions of sabotage.
Friday's crash happened at 2137 local time (1837 GMT) as the train, named as the Neva Express, was travelling near Bologoye in Tver region, Russian Railways told Russia's Interfax news agency in a statement. "Several versions are being considered. It must be just a pit someone dug out. Or the crater was left by an explosive device," a law enforcement official was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
Two aircraft carrying equipment for a mobile hospital were reported to be heading for the scene.
Russian media reports said that at least three carriages had come off the rails.
