Major fire at industrial estate Major fire at industrial estate
(about 2 hours later)
A substantial fire has broken out at an industrial estate in Londonderry, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service has said. Fire-fighters have brought a major blaze under control at an industrial estate in Londonderry after a fire-hour battle.
Eight fire appliances are at the fire at Pennyburn Industrial estate on the Buncrana Road. The fire, at a building on the Pennyburn Industrial Estate, broke out shortly after 1800 GMT on Friday.
Three buildings are believed to be on fire. The blaze was reported to the Fire Service shortly after 1800 GMT on Friday. Eight crews were called to the fire which had created what was described by a Fire and Rescue Services spokesman as "a dangerous situation".
There are no further details. Mark Derell said nearby units contained extremely flammable material.
"Our main concern was, first of all to extinguish the fire in the central unit, but also stop it spreading to the units either side," Mr Derell said.
"One was full of cardboard and compressed paper and the other was full of roofing material, so we had a very, very flammable situation both sides and our concern was to stop the fire spreading."
