Trains between Leeds and York have been cancelled after a crash that left a car overturned on railway tracks in Harrogate. A man has died after his car left the road and crashed down a railway embankment onto tracks in Harrogate, police said.
Images from the scene showed a vehicle overturned on tracks underneath a bridge at York Place. The road has been closed along with Stray Rein. The man, in his 70s, had been travelling on York Place in a silver VW Golf before the crash at about 15:20 BST, North Yorkshire Police said.
National Rail said services between Horsforth and Harrogate would not run, with disruption expected until the end of the day. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with his family being supported by specialist officers, a spokesperson confirmed.
North Yorkshire Police said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a serious collision on York Place in Harrogate. Motorists are asked to avoid the area at this time." The road remains closed, while the railway line between Harrogate and Leeds has also closed.
Some train services between Leeds and York have been cancelled because of the disruption.
Supt Andy Nunns said York Place was "likely to remain closed for most of this evening and the railway line between Harrogate and Leeds is likely to be closed for most of the night".
He offered his condolences to the man's family.
