The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed but Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for comment. Greater Manchester Police later confirmed the road had re-opened shortly after 10:00 BST.
Traffic cameras show police and fire and rescue crews on the carriageway. The incident had involved concerns for the safety of a man, the force said.
National Highways said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.
"Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
The agency said the diversion route can be followed by exiting the M60 anti-clockwise at Junction 12 and keeping left to join the M602 eastbound.
