He reportedly fled when police arrived at his flat and had been on the run. In a statement, Warwickshire Police said it had been told early in the investigation about the nature of Miss Hawker's injuries and the sexual assault.

"However, the Japanese police, who are undertaking the investigation, did not wish to publicise this for operational reasons," the force said.
"Mr and Mrs Hawker and their families are aware of the injuries and have always been keen to support the Japanese police in the investigation."
Mr Ichihashi reportedly fled his flat when police arrived and had been on the run until his arrest.
He had also reportedly undergone plastic surgery in recent months.
