La Bamba star on battery charge

La Bamba actor Lou Diamond Phillips has been charged in Los Angeles with domestic battery over an alleged incident involving his girlfriend.

Phillips is alleged to have "pushed and dragged" her in their shared home "resulting in scrapes to both knees", said City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo.

She locked herself in a bathroom before calling police, the statement from Mr Delgadillo also alleged.

The 44-year-old actor could face up to one year in jail if convicted.

He could also face a $2,000 (£1,050) fine. He is due to appear in court on 18 October.

The girlfriend was not identified in court documents.

Phillips' breakthrough role was as singer Ritchie Valens in the 1987 film La Bamba.

His other films include Stand and Deliver, Young Guns and Courage Under Fire, while he has recently guest starred in US TV series including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Numb3rs.
