The ancient wall and gateway in Lincoln was thought to have been damaged just after midnight

Police are appealing for information after "significant damage" was caused to a Roman wall in Lincoln.

Lincolnshire Police said they received a report of damage to the ancient wall and gateway between the car parks at City Hall in Beaumont Fee at 09:18 BST on Sunday.

Following an investigation, the force believes the incident happened just after midnight and said their efforts were now "focused on identifying a suspect".

Councillor Joshua Wells, portfolio holder for inclusive economic growth at the city council, said staff were "shocked and saddened by the mindless act of vandalism".

Police are asking anyone with information to get in touch

Wells added: "This scheduled ancient monument is part of the city's rich history and, as such, our CCTV team is working with Lincolnshire Police to help them identify a suspect."
