The FBI has announced the arrest of the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University.
Kirk, 31, was killed with a single shot in what investigators believe was a targeted attack on Wednesday. Authorities said the shooter, dressed in dark clothing, fired from a rooftop on campus some distance away. The bullet struck him in the neck as he answered audience questions from a tented stage, sending hundreds of spectators fleeing in panic.
“The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with the FBI,” agency director Kash Patel said in a post on X Wednesday evening.“The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody. Kirk, 31, was killed while taking questions from the audience during a stop on his “American Comeback Tour” at the Orem campus. According to police, the gunman opened fire with a long gun from roughly 200 yards away, striking him in the neck. The shooting sent thousands of spectators fleeing in panic. Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the killing as a “political assassination,” calling it “a tragic day for our nation.”
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name. Video circulating on social media appeared to show the alleged gunman kneeling on the ground in white shorts and a blue sweatshirt, telling officers, “I have the right to remain silent.” “And I just want to remind you, we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah,” the governor added.
Police said earlier reports that identified an older white male as the shooter were incorrect. Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect. Utah Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said the investigation into “the person of interest” was still ongoing. “There was one shot fired and one victim. We believe this was a targeted attack against one individual,” he stated. Governor Cox added that “there is no information that would lead us to believe there is a second person involved.”
