All train lines into Stansted have been cancelled until 08:00 BST after a signalling issue - and security is dealing with delays due to a fire in a lounge Passengers at Stansted Airport missed their flights and others were delayed after trains were cancelled or disrupted
All trains into London Stansted Airport have been cancelled or disrupted on Wednesday morning due to signalling issues, National Rail has confirmed. Passengers have missed their flights after trains into London Stansted Airport were cancelled due to signalling issues.
A fault with the signalling system has affected CrossCountry services between Birmingham New Street and Stansted, and Greater Anglia services to and from the airport and London Liverpool Street. Network Rail said a fault with the signalling system affected services connecting the airport to London and Birmingham.
The disruption was expected to continue until 10:30 BST, National Rail said, while there are also substantial delays on the M11 and M25 in Essex, potentially impacting passengers. A spokesperson for the airport said rail services were "operating as normal but there may be some flight delays".
A small fire in the airport's Escape Lounge is also causing delays into the security area, a spokesperson for Stansted said. A small fire in the airport's Escape Lounge at 03:30 caused a "significant amount of smoke" and also caused delays into the security area, they added.
Part of the airport had to be closed off after crews dealt with the "small fire", which caused a "significant amount of smoke" at 03:30. It was quickly extinguished by the airport fire service and there were no reports of any injuries to passengers, they continued.
A spokesperson said it was quickly extinguished by the airport fire service and there were no reports of any injuries to passengers. Passengers were stopped from entering security for a while but it reopened at 06:00.
While travellers were stopped from entering security for a time, at 06:00 it reopened, but the airport warned there could be delays and urged passengers to check the status of their flights. Passengers were warned there could be delays and urged passengers to check the status of their flights.
Mr Hollman said there were "loads" of Nottingham Forest fans waiting to travel to Spain
Nottingham Forest fans were among those affected by the delays on their way to the Spanish city of Seville to watch the club play Real Betis.
Joe Hollman said he arrived at the airport at about 03:00 and said he "got through security really quick" before "hell broke loose".
He said: "As we got into departures, someone ran past with a fire extinguisher."
Mr Hollman and his friends were asked to leave the Wetherspoons, adding they could "smell a bit of smoke".
"We waited a couple of hours for departures to open," he said.
A spokesperson for the airport said rail services were "operating as normal but there may be some flight delays"
A passenger, who did not want to be named, said they were "looking forward" to going on holiday for the first time in 18 years.
The individual, who was travelling to Marrakesh, in Morocco, said they were "in the lounge area" before hearing the fire alarm.
"We got blocked into a zone for quite a while and then they said we could go through after an hour or two of waiting, and our flight had gone.
"Now it has been cancelled and there are no flights for the rest of the day, so there is no holiday now."
The airport thanked passengers for their patience and understanding
Connie Ryan, 24, was due to fly with Ryanair to Alicante with three of her friends for a four-night holiday in Benidorm.
Ms Ryan said they managed to get to the gate before their scheduled departure time but the plane had started taxiing.
"It was really manic. We have booked parking and lost about £100 on that," she said.
She added her friends had returned home to Biggleswade in Bedfordshire and they would all be "flying from Luton tomorrow".
"We will be flying back to Stansted so we will have to sort out transfers when we get back," she said.
A spokesperson for Ryainair said: "Passengers who may have missed their flight due to the security closure are being re-accommodated on the next available flight free of charge.
"In addition, passengers have been advised they can change their flight via our website or app."
