A large fire has broken out at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery in Los Angeles county in California, according to US media reports. A fire broke out at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery, California governor Gavin Newsom’s press office said, with a county official adding that the flames had been confined to one area.
The blaze began on Thursday night, after emergency services received reports of an explosion at the site, according to CBS news. The cause is unclear. The cause of the blaze was not clear, the Los Angeles Times said, while CBS said firefighters were called to the refinery in Los Angeles county after reports of an explosion.
Footage soon emerged showing a bright ball of orange flame against the night sky, followed by plumes of smoke. “Our office is coordinating with local and state agencies to ... ensure public safety,” Newsom’s press office said on X.
There have been no reports of injuries or evacuations. CBS cited police as saying they were not aware of any immediate injuries or evacuations, adding that the Los Angeles county superviser Holly Mitchell had said crews contained the fire to one area of the refinery.
Mark Rogers told the LA Times he was playing in his weekly adult soccer league at Aviation Park, a few miles from the Chevron plant, when the apparent explosion took place. “I thought we got nuked or something,” Rogers, 34, told the paper. The referee cancelled their game due to the heavy smoke, it reports. In a regulatory filing, the US energy company also reported emergency flaring at El Segundo.
