Version 0 of 1.

Lebanese government forces have been deployed along the border with Israel for the first time in decades.

The move, co-ordinated by UN peacekeepers, follows a UN-brokered ceasefire between Israel and the militant Lebanese movement Hezbollah.

A UN spokesman said troops had deployed south of the port of Naqoura and around the village of Mays al-Jabal.

Israel has delayed the completion of its withdrawal until after the Jewish New Year holidays which end on Sunday.

Lebanese soldiers had not been deployed for four decades along the Israeli border.

Palestinian guerrillas, Israeli occupying forces and - since the Israeli withdrawal in 2000 - Hezbollah have controlled the region in the intervening period.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which came into force on 14 August, established a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah following their 34-day war.

More than 1,000 Lebanese civilians and an unknown number of Hezbollah fighters were killed in the conflict.

Israel lost 116 soldiers in the fighting, while 43 of its civilians were killed in Hezbollah rocket attacks.
