One report said the firing was close to a military parade ground, another that it was an attack on a local mosque. Reports quoting police said it was an attack on a mosque close to military housing units.
"We have reports that firing was heard," Mumtaz Ahmed, a police officer, told the Reuters news agency. Ambulances have rushed to the scene amid reports that gunfire continues. Reports say there have been casualties.

The Associated Press quoted local police as saying the latest attack was on a mosque close to the Pakistani army headquarters. Eyewitnesses have told the BBC that at least two explosions took place after an outbreak of gunfire. The area is cordoned off by the security forces and media have no access.
Police official Waqas Ahmed says gunfire was continuing in the area and at least one explosion was also heard, AP reported. The incident appears to have taken place near or inside the Parade Lines mosque where people were preparing for the Friday congregation.
The mosque is in the busy Qasim Market area which is located in the cantonment area along the GT Road a short distance from the army headquarters.
The area has several offices of the defence establishment and the intelligence agencies.
Several militant attacks have taken place in this area in the recent past.
There has been a pattern of militant groups trying to attack security targets inside Pakistan of late, as the army pursues an offensive against militants in South Waziristan.
While there has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the latest incident, the Pakistani Taliban have carried out many recent attacks.
