A large-scale police operation is under way in Nottingham ahead of two demonstrations and a military parade.

Protesters from Unite Against Fascism were expected in the city centre ahead of a demonstration by the English Defence League at lunchtime.

Police plan to keep the two sides apart as Christmas shoppers and football supporters visit the city.

The Mercian Regiment is also marching through the city after returning from Afghanistan.

Police have been gearing up for a major operation to stop any violence during the protest by the English Defence League against "radical Islam".

The statue of Robin Hood outside Nottingham Castle was boarded up to prevent damage during the protests.
