Amateur footage of the national students' day protests across Iran, 7 December 2009. The annual event commemorates the death of three students in Tehran in 1953. Many supporters of Iran's opposition movement turned out to voice their own protests at the official event.

Students protest by singing an anti-government song

Protests were held at universities across the country.

Female students joined hands to sing an anti-government protest song at the University of Hormozgan, in the south of Iran.

The song's lyrics are: "Hey classmates - let's try and do something together".

The video was sent to BBC Persian TV.

Some reports suggest opposition supporters carried Iranian flags without the red Islamic symbol emblazoned in the middle of the white strip of the flag.

The green flags and green balloons indicate the students support the opposition.

There were several reports of running violence between opposition protesters and police at Tehran's prestigious Amirkabir University of Technology.

Iran's official IRNA news agency said the university's student leader, Majid Tavakoli, was among those arrested on 7 December.
