The parents of Madeleine McCann have returned to Praia da Luz while visiting Portugal for a court case over a book claiming their daughter is dead.

On the Find Madeleine website, Kate McCann said she had longed to return for "personal and emotional reasons", but "our pain feels much rawer here".

Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, was three when she vanished from a flat in the Algarve resort in May 2007.

She has not been found despite a major investigation and global publicity.

The couple travelled back to the Portuguese town after the hearing in the capital Lisbon was unexpectedly delayed.

It was postponed after the lawyer for the book's author did not turn up on Friday for health reasons, a court clerk said.

Although our pain feels much rawer here, it is comforting at the same time since we feel closer to Madeleine Kate McCann

An update from Mrs McCann on the Find Madeleine website read: "We travelled to Praia da Luz yesterday afternoon. I have longed to come back here for two years for personal and emotional reasons.

"Early this morning we went to the lovely little church of Nossa Senhora da Luz. It was so quiet and peaceful - a real sanctuary.

"Although our pain feels much rawer here, it is comforting at the same time since we feel closer to Madeleine.

"We then walked down to the rocks on the beach, with its crashing waves and sense of vastness and freedom - another place where I've always felt able to reach out to Madeleine and find a little solace."

The court hearing was an attempt to overturn the banning of the controversial book that claims Madeleine is dead.

A Portuguese judge granted an injunction banning the book, The Truth Of The Lie, by Portuguese former policeman Goncalo Amaral, in September.

Mr Amaral had been involved in the initial investigation but was later taken off the case.

In his book, Mr Amaral questioned the McCanns' account that Madeleine was taken while they were eating with friends.
