Armed police cordoned off a street in a Devon town on Saturday evening.

Linden Terrace, Newton Abbot, was shut for about three hours and people were told to stay in their homes.

Residents reported that at about the same time a number of cars were stopped in the nearby Totnes Road and sniffer dogs were searching a woodland.

Police have not yet confirmed what the incident was, but said a 29-year-old man had been arrested nearby in connection with the incident.

A police officer shouting to get into the house for safety's sake Ruth Daley

Local resident, Ruth Daley, told BBC News: "I was talking to my neighbour in the garden at about five o'clock and all of a sudden there was shout to get in.

"I assumed it was a person with a dog, but it was a police officer shouting to get into the house for safety's sake.

"We went upstairs to the windows to look out and it became clear there were several police cars staking out a house further up the street.

"There were armed officers which was quite shocking and alarming and we started to realise there was a drama unfolding on our doorstep."

She added: "It's been a bit worrying but we didn't hear any shots being fired.

"It felt like it was a controlled situation."
