A senior source within the Trust told the BBC that while Millie was not on a child protection register at the time of her death her family may have been known to social services. She was taken with her mother, Rachel, to the Erne Hospital on Thursday and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children.
There, she was kept on a life support machine until members of her family arrived to say goodbye.
In a statement released on Saturday, Millie's family said they were suffering "unbearable grief" and that they were "heartbroken" and "numb" with pain.
BBC NI's health correspondent Marie Louise Connolly said the incident was "devastating" for all those involved.
"One police officer I was speaking to at the weekend told me that the scene inside the house was shocking," she said.
"The entire incident has had a tremendous impact on police officers, those who work in the Western Trust and doctors and nurses who treated Millie in both hospitals."
Senior social workers within the Western Trust are helping police with their inquiries.
At the weekend, files and papers relating to the case were gathered and "sealed" .

However, the BBC has learned that social workers spent sometime over the weekend gathering notes and files on the case and sealing them for the police investigation. Senior staff in the Western Trust are to meet on Monday to review the case and to ensure that their contacts with the family were appropriate and thorough.
