At 0630 GMT there were 50 firefighters, including 20 in breathing apparatus, at the scene. Strathclyde Fire and Rrescue said crews had to fight their way through "considerable heat and smoke" to enter 83 Waddell Court, where the fire had broken out.
Ten fire engines were also in the area with one side of nearby Ballater Street closed to traffic. More than 40 people were rescued or escorted from the tower block.
Part of the flat where the fire broke out is understood to have collapsed. Paramedics gave medical attention to 15 residents at a casualty care point on the ground floor of the building. Other residents were moved to Gorbals Leisure Centre.

At the height of the blaze, about 20 fire appliances were at the scene and 20 fire fighters, wearing breathing apparatus, were in action inside the building.
The fire was brought under control at about 0700 GMT.
Area commander, Garry Milne, one of the officers in charge during the incident, said: "In my 20-plus years in the fire service I have never seen such a fierce fire in a property such as this.
"Our firefighters were magnificent in the way that they fought their way through intense heat and smoke to tackle the blaze."
