Version 0 of 1.

An investigation into whether the death of a man in his 20s was suspicious or not is continuing by police in Cardiff.

Police were called by an ambulance crew to an address in Pen Y Peel Road, in the Canton area on Saturday morning.

Officers are trying to establish if the man was assaulted during an incident between two groups of men at 2325 GMT on Friday.

Police said it was too early to connect the death with a possible assault. Post mortem tests were due on Saturday.

Police said that the man, whose identity has not been released, had been in pubs in the area on Friday night and may have been in The Maltings pub when an incident took place.

Later that evening, it is understood another incident took place between two groups of men at the junction of Pen Y Peel Road and Cowbridge Road, where the man may have been assaulted.

On Saturday, Det Supt Stuart McKenzie who is leading the inquiry, said: "It is too early at this stage to speculate whether the cause of death is related to the altercation that may have taken place last night.

"However, we are treating the death as suspicious.

"I am appealing to anyone who saw what happened at The Maltings or at the junction of Pen Y peel Road and Cowbridge Road to come forward with that information so that we can clarify exactly what happened.

"I urge anyone who saw the victim or has any knowledge of his movements to contact us."

Pen Y Peel Road was cordoned off by police early on Saturday morning and there was a high police presence in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 02920 571530 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
