A Devon fishing boat has sunk in the English Channel after a collision with another vessel. A Devon man is missing, believed dead, after his fishing boat sank when it was in collision with another vessel in the English Channel on Sunday evening.
French coastguards rescued three crew from the Teignmouth-registered Etoile Des Ondes, but one man is missing. Three remaining crew members of the Teignmouth-registered Etoile Des Ondes, were rescued and taken to France.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the accident happened about 1925 GMT on Sunday off the coast of Cherbourg. The 50ft (164ft) vessel, which sails out of Weymouth, Dorset, was off the coast of Cherbourg when it was hit.
The search for the missing fisherman was suspended after several hours, but a decision will be taken later on whether to resume it. A police spokesman said relatives of the missing 21-year-old Teignmouth man have been informed.
A spokesman from Falmouth Coastguard said the other vessel involved in the collision has not been identified. Mark Clark, from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, said three men were rescued from a life raft by a helicopter and taken to a passing passenger ferry.
All four crewmen are from the Teignmouth area. Sinking investigated
They were later airlifted hospital in Cherbourg, suffering from cuts and bruises.
Speaking about the missing fisherman, Mr Clark said: "He was wearing yellow oil skins, but he was not wearing a life jacket.
"The search went on pretty well most of the night until about four in the morning."
Devon and Cornwall Police said the circumstances of the sinking were being investigated.
