Body found during search of lake

A man's body has been found by divers searching for two friends who went missing after reports they went into a Northamptonshire lake to rescue a dog.

Paul Lichfield, 30, of Raunds, and Philip Surridge, 42, of Corby, went shooting in the Brightwell Lake area near Ringstead, police said.

Witnesses saw two men go into the lake to rescue a dog on Monday.

Police said divers recovered the body during a search of the lake. No formal identification has been made.

Officers have stopped the search as weather conditions have caused the lake to freeze over, making the mission dangerous.

Police will resume their search of the lake on Wednesday morning.

Items belonging to the men were found nearby. The dog and a Renault vehicle have been found at the scene, police said.

The fire service was called at 1716 GMT on Monday to reports that someone was in trouble in the water.

Two fire engines and two specialist water rescue teams searched for two hours but did not find anyone, a spokesman for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
