Israeli settler shot in West Bank
(about 1 hour later) | |
An Israeli man has been shot and killed in his car near a Jewish settlement in the north of the West Bank, the Israeli military says.
It said his car came under fire outside the settlement of Einav, near Nablus.
Security forces are at the scene and roadblocks have been set up in the search for attackers.
Separately, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked opposition leader - and former caretaker PM - Tzipi Livni to join his government.
"The prime minister asked Mrs Livni to join a national unity government... in the face of the national and international challenges facing Israel today," a statement from Mr Netanyahu's office said.
Mrs Livni's Kadima party, the largest in the 120-member parliament, has been rocked by recent reports that Mr Netanyahu has asked several of its MPs to join his coalition.
Search for gunmen | |
Meanwhile, Israeli police said they were searching the area between the Jewish settlements of Einav and Shavei Shomron for the gunmen behind the shooting attack.
Reports said the victim was a settler who was driving alone when his car was sprayed with gunfire. He died of his wounds shortly afterwards.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Palestinian militants were suspected of carrying out the attack - a rare occurrence in the West Bank these days.
Nearly a half million Israelis live in dozens of settlements across the West Bank and east Jerusalem - territories occupied in the 1967 war.
The fate of the settlements is one of the thorniest issues in the Middle East peace talks. |
