An Afghan soldier has killed a US serviceman and wounded two Italian soldiers in a shooting in the western province of Badghis, officials say. A US serviceman has been killed and two Italians wounded in Afghanistan, officials say, amid reports an Afghan soldier was responsible.
They says that the Afghan National Army member opened fire on a joint Afghan and foreign base. A senior Afghan officer told Reuters that the Afghan soldier opened fire on the foreign troops, and that he was also injured and was now in hospital.
A senior Afghan officer told Reuters that the Afghan soldier was also injured and was in hospital. But a spokesman for the the Nato-led Isaf mission said that the details of the incident were not clear.
But other officials said the circumstances of the attack were not clear. An Isaf official told the BBC that it was now under investigation.
The official stressed that it could not be confirmed that the US soldier was shot by an Afghan soldier.
Correspondents say that it was also not clear if the shootings happened as a result of a deliberate attack, or whether it was a friendly fire incident as part of a wider battle taking place at the time.
A number of American soldiers have in the past been killed or injured by Afghan soldiers in friendly fire incidents and deliberate attacks.
