Man held after graves desecrated

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after up to 100 graves were damaged at a churchyard in Swindon.

Many of the headstones and ornaments at Christ Church were subjected to varying degrees of desecration over the Christmas week.

Police were called after a visitor to the churchyard spotted a man allegedly causing damage.

A man, who lives locally, was bailed to allow further investigation.

A Wiltshire Police spokeswoman said its thoughts were with all the families who have been affected.

"These incidents have caused a great deal of distress and I would like to appeal for anyone who has any information to please contact police or Crimestoppers," she added.
