Woman killed in hit-and-run crash

A woman was killed and two other people were critically injured in a hit-and-run crash in north London in the early hours of New Year's Day. The 20-year-old woman and four others, also in their 20s, were hit by a Honda car that mounted the pavement on the North Circular Road in Palmers Green. The woman died at the scene, a man and a woman are critically ill in hospital and another man suffered a broken leg. Five men in their 30s were arrested at an address in Ilford over the crash. Car abandoned Metropolitan Police officers and the London Ambulance Service were called to the scene, close to the junction with Green Lanes, at about 0425 GMT. The police said the white Honda was thought to have been travelling eastbound with a red vehicle at the time of the crash. After the crash, the occupants of the Honda ran off while the red car did not stop. A police spokesman said: "At this early stage, collision investigators believe that the white Honda was travelling eastbound with a red vehicle when it mounted the footpath and was in collision with the pedestrians. "The occupants of the white Honda stopped at the scene and abandoned the vehicle, running off on foot. "The red vehicle did not stop at the scene." The fourth pedestrian was allowed home.
